It has now been 12½ years since the packaging world became acquainted with Bio4Pack. A remarkable company that wanted to play an important role in making the packaging industry more sustainable. Bio4Pack’s mission has not changed in all these years: to develop and offer innovative packaging that meets the demand for high-quality, sustainable and fully compostable packaging. The growth and success of Bio4Pack over the past 12½ years is proof that the mission and vision of founder Patrick Gerritsen is the answer to the packaging needs of many manufacturers.
In the early years of Bio4Pack, the emphasis was mostly on packaging for (organic) fruit and vegetables. Think of potato bags, nets for packaging onions and garlic, but also trays for various types of fruit. Many clients saw the connection between organically grown products and sustainable packaging. With the development of new compostable packaging materials, compostable packaging also became interesting for many other types of products. The innovations made it possible, for example, to package chips in compostable laminate, which means that traditional environmentally unfriendly chip packaging is no longer necessary. But compostable alternatives were also introduced for candy bars, coffee cups and fresh meat. Another important innovation are the paddy straw trays; packaging made from the waste of rice fields in Asia. This packaging is not only good for the environment, but also gives poor farmers in Asia a new source of income. The most recent development concerns a packaging film that meets the strict EN standard for home composting. As a result, the consumer can throw away the packaging on his own compost heap after use without this affecting the quality of the compost.
The success of Bio4Pack has resulted in the company having grown into a company with 10 employees who are housed in a modern office environment with two large warehouses. In order to be able to respond even better to the wishes and expectations of the customers, Bio4Pack will soon be using a new laminating machine, which will further improve flexibility and quality. But Patrick Gerritsen doesn’t want to stop there. “Compostable packaging should become even more important in the packaging world. It is therefore of great importance that existing systems (particularly in the waste sector) that frustrate innovations are broken. We all want a sustainable and circular world, now and for generations to come. That’s why I sometimes felt like Don Quixote fighting the windmills, but I’m a positive person and that’s why I prefer to associate myself with Elon Musk. A man with a mission for a beautiful, sustainable and circular future,” says Patrick Gerritsen.
